Slope Stability 2026: Slope Stability Is Essential for Achieving Sustainable and Efficient Mining Operations

Lima, June 25, 2025. “Slope stability is essential for achieving sustainable, safe, and efficient mining projects,” emphasized Antonio Samaniego, a member of the Organizing Committee for the International Slope Stability Congress (SS 2026), one of the world’s most important forums on mining slopes, which will be held for the first time in Peru in 2026.

Samaniego introduced SS 2026 during his participation in the ISRM Council Meeting and Eurock 2025, two international events held in Norway that brought together scientists, engineers, and leading professionals in the field of rock mechanics and engineering from various countries.

“Slope stability is fundamental to ensuring and managing safe, sustainable, and efficient mining operations. For this reason, I am proud to announce that the Slope Stability Congress will be held in Lima, Peru, next year. This event will focus on best practices in open-pit slope stability and will bring together young students, geotechnical engineers, researchers, educators, scientists, and other mining industry professionals from around the world,” he said.

Samaniego also represents Peru's national group in the International Society for Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering (ISRM). The event brought together representatives from national groups across six regions—Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, Latin America, and North America—representing a total of 60 countries. The ISRM is a member of the Federation of International Geo-Engineering Societies.

He also attended the international conference on geomechanics and rock mechanics, Eurock 2025, organized by ISRM. This conference presented and discussed the latest advancements, research findings, and technologies in areas such as tunneling, mining, stability, and the sustainable use of resources.

SS 2026 in Peru

Organized by the Large Open Pit Project (LOP) and supported in Peru by the Peruvian Society of Geoengineering and the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers (IIMP), Slope Stability 2026 will take place at the Lima Convention Center in the San Borja district from October 26 to 29 next year.

The 10th edition of this event aims to create a forum for discussion, knowledge exchange, networking, and the dissemination of best engineering practices for geotechnical, hydrogeological, structural, and blasting control issues related to the stability of open-pit excavations in the mining industry.

The biennial program will include keynote presentations, technical sessions, short courses, and field visits to mining companies in Peru.
